Playwright’s Note

I’ve always been suspicious of the playwright’s note. The idea that you, audience member (thank you for coming), are going to read my writing about my writing before you watch my writing and then later perhaps talk about my writing on your way home feels a little redundant, no? If you’re like me, you’re really here for one of three reasons:

  1. You have, against all odds, arrived early to the theater and your friend isn’t here yet. Having skimmed through artist bios and bravely tamed any resulting jealousies and insecurities, you find yourself with time to kill. Why on earth doesn’t Kevin ever show up on time? Do better, Kevin.

  2. You’ve come alone (also brave!) and need something to do. No pressure, but my suggestion would be to put this program down and strike up a conversation with the folks around you, who just by being here, have demonstrated a shared interest in plays. Either that, or they’re obligated to come because they know someone in the show. Find out which!

  3. You’ve already seen the show, and in the aftermath, have found yourself having questions and wanting answers. Who does this playwright think he is? What gives him the right? My suggestion: ask that friend you brought (or made!). I’m sure they have a take. Kevin always has a take.

If none of the above apply, dear theatergoer, then you’ve come here in earnest to read my writing about my writing. I applaud your zeal, though I admit I’m far more interested in your thoughts than mine. In any case, having now cheekily evaded your scrutiny for the roughly 250 words that were requested of me, I find myself running short on space to say anything too explicative about my work. I’ll leave you with this:

Feel. Don’t let yourself go numb. Feel. Because then you’ll do. And feeling and doing are really good, important things.

Ok! That does it from me. Hopefully Kevin’s here by now. The play is called How to Have Sex Again, and it’s about to begin. Have a fucking blast.

Director’s Note

I’ve loved this play since the first time I read it. I fell in love with it even more when I heard Louis and Hannah read it aloud at my kitchen table. I literally had tears rolling down my face, they had me laughing so hard. As someone who is often riddled with anxiety and has an opinion on just about everything, G & B were so familiar to me.

To me, this play is a punch in the gut, a kiss on the forehead, and a good long look in the mirror all wrapped up into one. How to Have Sex Again makes me believe in taking risks. In telling someone they are beautiful. In showing up imperfectly but still showing up. In being cringe as hell and yawping to the wind. In putting my freaking phone down.

In making the art I want to make.

Pleasure is what we should be in honest pursuit of. Not instant dopamine hits, not “protecting our peace” so hard we end up home alone on a Friday night, but real human pleasure and joy that lasts. The kind that requires looking another person in the eyes. The kind that requires bravery and letting go.

I hope you feel all the sweaty palms, overshares, voicenotes, late nights and early mornings, laughs, and hope that went into creating this piece for you.

Thank you so so much to the artists who made this production happen, you all are incredibly and scarily intuitive. To my family, and everyone who contributed money, time, advice, and resources, I genuinely cannot express my gratitude enough.

To Hannah, and to Louis. You both really rock. So much. Thank you for being fearless, silly, grimy, gross, bold, bolder, honest as hell, and for trusting me. I love you, there I said it!!
